Having collected a lot of LEGO Bionicle over the years, I wanted to put as much of it as possible to use. Bionicle weapons, armour, wings and vehicle parts are often in the Pearl Light Gray LEGO colour, and I had a couple trans-light-blue tubes from the small midi-scale Millennium Falcon!
I wanted to make it look like my arms had actually been replaced with mechanical and cybernetic parts. Since i have quite skinny arms anyway, this was easy! I started out with a Technic "frame" for the biceps and forearm plates, then built around it with all sorts of pieces, trying my best to fill in the gaps. Getting the curveature around the shoulders was difficult, but the curved 'scythe'-like weapons worked wonders! The bicep plates fasten on to the arms with elastic and velcro that I sewed onto a strap, and the forearm plates fasten with Technic pins and ball joints.
I actually didn't need to use glue here, and it's a good thing too, because the glue I use on LEGO is comprised of Methyl-ethyl-ketone (MEK) and it only works on ABS parts. Many of the Bionicle pieces are made from a different kind of plastic, and superglue is not only expensive but leaves an awful residue. So i had to make sure every connection was strong. Careful consideration was needed to make sure i wasn't using a fragile connection in an area that would frequently bump against things (eg the shoulders or the elbows!) If i ever tried this idea again I would use a thin foam or fabric base inbetween the lego and the straps for added comfort and practicality. My friend Sara (A Different Stroke) did the makeup.
